PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The 2009 BIG
EAST Women's Soccer Championship heads to Storrs,
Conn., on the campus of the University of Connecticut
for three games, with the semifinals set to begin on Friday, Nov. 6. All three contests
of the Championship will be televised nationally on the CBS College Sports
Network. In addition, the Championship Game will be shown live on numerous
regional sports networks, as well as online at www.bigeast.tv
for $3.95.
On Friday,
Nov. 6 at 5 p.m., West Virginia (9-5-6, 5-3-3
BIG EAST), the American Division No. 3 seed, will take on Marquette (14-4-2, 7-2-2 BIG EAST), the
American Division No. 1 seed. The teams met earlier this season on Sept. 24 in Morgantown, W.Va.
The Mountaineers won 1-0 to extend their streak to 5-0-0 all-time against the
Golden Eagles. West Virginia
is led by senior midfielder Carolyn Blank, who has anchored the team's defense.
Junior goalkeeper Kerri Butler has
been playing well of late allowing just two goals over the last eight games.
She also has recorded seven shutouts in that stretch. West
Virginia is 10-6-4 all-time in the BIG EAST Championship,
including a 1-0 win at Rutgers on Nov. 1 to advance
to the semifinals. The Mountaineers are under the direction of head coach Nikki
Izzo-Brown who is in her 14th season with the team.
Marquette is riding a season-best
eight-game unbeaten steak that includes five consecutive wins. The Golden
Eagles are a defensive force, having allowed a league-low 10 goals in 20 games
this season. Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Kulla leads the league with 14
shutouts and has not allowed a goal since Oct. 9 (658 minutes). Offensively,
sophomore midfielder/forward Rachael Sloan leads the team with 15 points,
including five goals. The Golden Eagles are ranked No. 10 in the Nov. 2 Soccer America poll
and are receiving votes in the latest NSCAA rankings. The Golden Eagles are
under the direction of head coach Markus Roeders, who is in his 14th season.
The
second game on Friday is scheduled to kick off at approximately 7:30 p.m. St. John's (13-5-1, 6-4-1
BIG EAST), the American Division No. 2 seed, will face Notre Dame (15-3-1,
10-0-1 BIG EAST), the National Division No. 1 seed. The teams have not met
since Oct. 7, 2007, when the Irish came away with a 3-0 win in Queens, N.Y.
Notre Dame is ranked No. 4 in the Nov. 2 NSCAA Poll and No. 7 in the Soccer
America rankings. The Irish are riding a 13-game unbeaten streak and have won
seven straight games. Notre Dame ranks second in the league in scoring at 2.11
goals per game and is led by junior midfielder Lauren Fowlkes (eight goals), sophomore
forward Melissa Henderson (11 goals). Sophomore midfielder Courtney Barg also
is a key part of the squad as one of the top defensive midfielders in the
country. Notre Dame is coached by Randy Waldrum, who is in his 11th season with
the team.
St. John's is making just is second
appearance in the league semifinals and its first since 1994. That year, the
league championship also was held in Storrs, Conn., and was won by St. John's. In 2009, sophomore goalkeeper
Kristin Russell helps lead a team that has totaled nine shutouts during the
season. Russell ranks among the league leaders with a 0.56 goals-against
average. Senior twins Amanda Pasciolla and Nicole Pasciolla also key the Red
Storm defense along with senior Nicole Doran. The Red Storm are under the
direction of head coach Ian Stone, who is in his 16th season.
The
regional sports networks televising Sunday's Championship Game include SNY -
Sportsnet New York, Cox Sports Television (New England, La., Fla. and Texas), Comcast
SportsNet Chicago, Time Warner Cable Sports 32 (Wis.),
West Virginia Public Television and Bright House Sports Network in Tampa. In addition,
Comcast in Philadelphia
and MASN (Mid-Atlantic Sports Network) will air the game on a same-day, tape
delay basis. This marks the 16th consecutive year in which the BIG EAST
Championship will be televised.
