HARTFORD, Conn. - Six different schools were
represented when the BIG EAST Conference presented its women's soccer
postseason honors and named its all-conference selections on Thursday evening
at the Hartford Hilton Hotel, in Hartford, Conn. Georgetown graduate student
Sara Jordan and Notre Dame junior forward Lauren Fowlkes were named the BIG
EAST Offensive Players of the Year, while Irish sophomore Courtney Barg was
named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year.
Connecticut redshirt senior Brittany Taylor earned BIG EAST
Defensive Player of the Year honors, while Rutgers
senior Erin Guthrie was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year. In addition,
Villanova freshman Heidi Sabatura was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year and
Marquette head
coach Markus Roeders was named the BIG EAST Coach of the Year. St. John's earned the first annual Fair Play
Award.
This
year's BIG EAST Championship is being held Nov. 6 and 8 at Morrone Stadium on
the campus of the University
of Connecticut. All three
games will be televised live nationally on CBS College Sports. In addition, the
title game also will be broadcast live on numerous regional sports networks
including SportsNet New York
(SNY) and streamed online at www.bigeast.tv
for $3.95.
Jordan earned BIG EAST Offensive Player
of the Year honors after totaling 15 points, including five goals during
conference play. She tied for the league lead with 15 points and 1.36 points per
game. She also tied for second in the BIG EAST with five assists and tied for
third with five goals. During the season, Jordan set the school all-time
scoring record in goals (27), assists (26) and points (80). She has totaled 23
points in all games this season, including eight goals and was named to the BIG
EAST weekly honor roll twice.
Fowlkes
also earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year honors after totaling 11
points, including five goals in conference action. Her conference point total
ranked as the fifth-highest, while her five goals were third-best. Fowlkes was
named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 28 and was named to
the weekly honor roll on Oct. 12. She also helped lead the Irish to their 12th
BIG EAST regular-season title. Fowlkes is the sixth consecutive Irish player to
earn BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year honors.
Taylor was named BIG EAST Defensive
Player of the Year adding to her preseason selection of BIG EAST Defensive
Player of the Year. She also won the award in 2007, becoming the second UConn
player to earn the honor twice following former Huskies standout Sara Whalen
who won the award in 1995 and 1996. Taylor
earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 21 and helped
anchor a UConn defense that recorded six shutouts, including four in conference
play.
Guthrie
also followed up her preseason selection by being named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper
of the Year. In conference play, she tallied the highest number of minutes
played with 1,063 and allowed just six goals for a 0.51 goals-against average.
The senior totaled 48 saves, posted an .889 save percentage and had five
shutouts. In all games, she posted a league-best 0.43 goals-against average and
allowed just eight scores over 18 games. Guthrie is the first Rutgers
player to earn Goalkeeper of the Year honors since the award began in 1999.
Barg was
named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year after moving into the holding
midfielder position this season. She totaled four points, including a pair of
assists, while playing in all 18 games for the Irish. Barg also helped Notre
Dame to its 12th regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST
Championship. The sophomore also has been a part of an Irish defense that
allowed just four goals during the year, including two in conference play.
Roeders
earns his second BIG EAST Coach of the Year honors and is in his 14th season on
the Golden Eagles' sidelines. He also won the award in 2005 during Marquette's inaugural
season in the BIG EAST. Roeders helped direct Marquette to a 7-2-2 mark in league play
totaling 23 points to win the BIG EAST American Division. It was the first BIG
EAST regular-season title in school history for the Golden Eagles and allowed
them to clinch the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Championship for the first time
in school history.
Sabatura is
the first Villanova player to earn the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year award. The
freshman was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week three times this season
(Aug. 24, Sept. 7 and Sept. 28) and totaled 18 points, including seven goals. In
11 conference games, she had seven points, including three goals.
St. John's, under the direction of 16th-year
head coach Ian Stone, earns the first annual Fair Play Award after totaling
just 70 fouls and one yellow card during conference play. The Fair Play Award
is given to the team that accumulates the lowest amount of points using the
following scoring system: Foul (one point), Yellow Card (five points) and Red
Card (10 points). St. John's
totaled just 75 points in conference play and was not issued a red card.
