NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Freshman Kayla Soles hit a two-out, two-RBI double to give No. 1 Louisville a 2-0 victory over No. 5 DePaul in the first semifinal of the 2012 BIG EAST Softball Championship at Melissa Cook Stadium on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. The Cardinals advance to their third-straight championship game and will play at 6 p.m. on Saturday against the winner of No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 6 St. John’s. The game will be televised live on ESPN2. The Cardinals broke through for the game’s only runs in the top of the fourth inning. Sophomores Jordan Trimble and Maggie Ruckenbrod put runners on the corners with back-to-back singles. Soles connected on a liner to the centerfield fence, her only hit of the tournament thus far, for an RBI double that cleared the bases and put Louisville ahead 2-0. NOTRE DAME, Ind. – No. 2 seed Notre Dame rolled to a 5-0 victory over No. 7 seed Rutgers in the fourth game of the 2012 BIG EAST Softball Championship quarterfinals at Melissa Cook Stadium on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. The Irish will play No. 6 St. John’s in the semifinal round Friday at 6:30 p.m. Notre Dame wasted no time, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Dani Miller sent a deep ball to dead center for a sacrifice fly to score senior Alexa Maldonado. The hit would have been a three-run home run, but Rutgers freshman centerfielder Chandler Howard reached over the fence for the out. The second Irish run came on a single by freshman Emilee Koerner. The Fighting Irish added to the lead in the third inning with an RBI double by junior Amy Buntin and a two-run home run by Koerner, bringing the score to 5-0. NOTRE DAME, Ind. – No. 6 seed St. John’s upset the two-time defending champion No. 3 Syracuse 2-1 in the third game of the 2012 BIG EAST Softball Championship at Melissa Cook Stadium on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. It was the first tournament victory for the Red Storm since the inaugural BIG EAST Championship in 1990. St. John’s will move on to play in a semifinal game on Friday at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of No. 2 seed Notre Dame and No. 7 seed Rutgers. Defense ruled through the first four innings of the game, with neither team registering more than three hits. NOTRE DAME, Ind. – No. 1 seed Louisville earned a shutout victory over No. 8 Connecticut, winning 8-0 in five innings of Game 2 of the 2012 BIG EAST Softball Championship at Melissa Cook Stadium at the University of Notre Dame. The Cardinals will move onto the semifinals where they will face No. 5 seed DePaul at 4 p.m. on Friday. Louisville first got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning, rounding the bases for two runs. Senior Kristin Austin and sophomore Katie Keller reached base on a single and a walk, respectively, and both came around to score. Cardinal junior Alicja Wolny added to the lead in the bottom of the third when she sent the tournament’s first home run over the centerfield fence to put Louisville up 3-0. NOTRE DAME, Ind. – One inning of offense was all it took for No. 5 DePaul to down No. 4 USF 6-0 in the first game of the 2012 BIG EAST Softball Championship at Melissa Cook Stadium on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. The Blue Demons will advance to the semifinals on Friday at 4 p.m. and play the winner of No. 1 Louisville and No. 8 Connecticut. The game began as a pitching duel, with neither team collecting a hit until the fourth inning. Two of the league’s best pitchers, USF sophomore Sara Nevins and DePaul sophomore Kirsten Verdun, were both sharp. Through four innings, the game had seen only two hits with two walks and one hit batter.
