Former St. John’s Men’s Soccer Standout Wins MLS Cup
St. John’s men’s soccer alum Chris Wingert helped Real Salt Lake defeat the Los Angeles Galaxy in the 2009 MLS Cup held Sunday night at Qwest Field in Seattle, Wash. After playing to a 1-1 draw through regulation and overtime, RSL won its first MLS Cup with a 5-4 victory in the penalty kick shootout. Wingert played the entire 120 minutes in the match, solidifying a defensive unit that limited the opportunities for Galaxy stars Landon Donovan and David Beckham. Wingert then converted in the sixth round of the penalty kick shootout.

The 2003 M.A.C. Hermann Trophy winner, Wingert was a two-time first team all-American at St. John’s, the 2003 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and a four-time All-BIG EAST Team member, while helping the Red Storm reach the College Cup in 2001 and 2003.
