There are six women's soccer teams in action on Friday as the first round of the NCAA Championship kicks off Friday night. Three league teams are hosting contests as No. 14/7 West Virginia welcomes Morehead State, No. 7/10 Notre Dame has New Mexico and No. 12/9 Marquette has Central Michigan. On Nov. 7, the Mountaineers won their second BIG EAST Championship tournament title.
In other NCAA action, Connecticut squares off against Hofstra in Chestnut Hill, Mass., Georgetown meets Siena in College Park, Md., and USF takes on Auburn in Tallahassee, Fla. The Bulls are making their first appearance in the NCAA Championship.
The women's basketball season begins with 13 teams in action on Friday. There are two televised contests on the slate as Louisville opens its new arena (The YUM! Center) against No. 4/4 Tennessee. The game tips off at 7 p.m., and will be shown nationally on CBS College Sports at 9:30 p.m. The game also will feature a pregame jersey retirement ceremony of former star Angel McCoughtry. A sellout crowd of more than 22,000 is expected on hand.
In addition Rutgers heads to California in a west coast matchup that will be televised on Comcast Sports Net-Bay Area at 10 p.m. ET. The Scarlet Knights are 25-11 all-time in season-openers.
Cincinnati hosts Southwest Baptist, while Pittsburgh welcomes Youngstown State. Both games are set for 11 a.m. No. 14/16 St. John's takes on Marist at 1:30 p.m., in the Commerce Bank/Wildcat Classic in the Little Apple, Manhattan, Kan. No. 12/12 Notre Dame hosts New Hampshire, while Villanova has local rival La Salle. Both of those games begin at 4 p.m.
Later that evening at 5 p.m., USF tips off against Jacksonville at home and Providence travels to St. Joseph's. No. 11/11 West Virginia will host Loyola (Md.) at 7 p.m., in a game streamed online at ESPN3.com. At 7:05 p.m., Seton Hall begins the Anne Donovan era at Florida Gulf Coast.
DePaul host Valparaiso at home in the Preseason NIT at 8 p.m. ET. In addition Syracuse begins the year with a doubleheader following their men's contest. The Orange are scheduled to take on Northeastern at approximately 9:30 p.m.
Women’s volleyball wraps-up the BIG EAST regular-season this weekend with three spots at the BIG EAST Championship still up for grabs. St. John’s, who had rattled off three straight wins to stay in the championship mix, travels to West Virginia for a 4 p.m. match. Three other matches have 7 p.m. start times, including Georgetown hosting Villanova. No 19 Cincinnati travels to Syracuse, who is one of three teams tied at 5-7. Louisville travels to Marquette to round out the Friday schedule.
The semifinal round of the BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship, presented by Travelodge kicks off today at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. Red Division No. 2 seed Cincinnati takes on the Blue Division No. 5 seed Providence at 5 p.m., while Red Division No. 1 seed Louisville squares off with Blue Division No. 2 seed Notre Dame at 7:30 p.m. Winners of the semifinal games will battle for the tournament title Nov. 14 at noon.
Ten BIG EAST men’s basketball teams tip-off their seasons tonight, including two coaches making their BIG EAST debuts. Kevin Willard makes his first appearance on the sideline for Seton Hall as the Pirates travel to No. 22/22 Temple at 7:30 p.m.
Mike Rice also debuts, as he takes his Rutgers squad to Jadwin Gymnasium for a matchup with preseason Ivy League favorite Princeton at 7:00 p.m. Georgetown is the only other BIG EAST team opening-up its season on the road, with the Hoyas making the trip to Old Dominion at 7 p.m.
Seven teams open up their seasons at home including Syracuse taking on Northern Iowa at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.com. The Panthers upset No.1 seed Kansas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year to advance to the sweet 16. Northern Iowa was selected to finish third in the Missouri Valley Conference this season.
USF hosts Southern Miss at the Sun Dome at 7 p.m. The Bulls finished the 2009-10 season with a 20-13 record including going 9-9 in the BIG EAST. West Virginia opens its season against Oakland at the WVU Coliseum, as the Mountaineers play their first game since last season’s Final Four appearance. The game will be available at 9 p.m. on ESPN3.com.
Villanova hosts Bucknell at the Pavilion at 8 p.m.also on ESPN3.com. Connecticut begins its season at Gampel Pavilion as Stony Brook comes to Storrs, Conn. for a 7 p.m. game. Notre Dame welcomes Georgia Southern at 8:30 p.m., while Marquette hosts Prairie View A&M at the Bradley Center at 9 p.m. ET.
