PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Dan Mavraides scored a career-high 26 points to lead Princeton to a 78-73 overtime victory over Rutgers on Friday night, spoiling the debut of Scarlet Knights coach Mike Rice.
Rice was coaching his first game with Rutgers after leading Robert Morris to two straight NCAA appearances.
In beating Rutgers for the first time since Dec. 8, 2004, Princeton won just its second game in the last 12 meetings between the two schools.
Mavraides hit two foul shots to give Princeton a 67-65 lead to start OT and the Tigers never gave up the lead. Mavraides hit the last of his six three-pointers to make it 72-68 with 1:48 left.
Ian Hummer had 17 points for Princeton and Douglas Davis added 16. James Beatty led Rutgers with 16, while Dane Miller and freshman Mike Poole had 14 each.
