The best individual performance of the night came in Hartford, Conn., as Connecticut guard Kemba Walker turned in a career-high 42 points as the Huskies took an 89-73 win against Vermont.
Walker shot 15-of-24 from the field and scored 21 points in each half, tying Cliff Robinson's record for the most points by a Connecticut player in the XL Center.
Freshman forward Roscoe Smith scored 15 points and center Alex Oriakhi had 11 as Connecticut improved to 2-0.
Marquette improved to 3-0 with a solid 89-69 win against Green Bay at the Bradley Center. Forward Jae Crowder came off the bench to lead a balanced scoresheet with 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
The Golden Eagles shot 52.5 percent from the field and led 53-33 by halfitme. Freshman guard Vander Blue scored 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting for Marquette.
Notre Dame also stands at 3-0 after the Irish got a game-high 22 points from guard Ben Hansbrough in a 102-62 win against Chicago State. It was Notre Dame's first 40-point win since a 102-62 win against Northern Illinois Dec. 8, 2007.
Forward Tim Abromaitis helped the Notre Dame effort with 21 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.
St. John's picked up its first win of the season - and the first win under coach Steve Lavin - as the Red Storm overcame a halftime deficit to beat Columbia 79-69 at Carnesecca Arena.
D.J. Kennedy led the way with 18 points, six rebounds and three steals as St. John's outscored the Lions by a 44-27 margin in the second half.
Villanova stands at 3-0 after an 82-66 win against Boston University in a second-round game of the NIT Season Tip-Off. Guard Maalik Wayns had 12 points, 12 assists and six rebounds for the Wildcats, who have won 40 consecutive games at The Pavilion.
Thursday's BIG EAST action starts early in the day when West Virginia meets Davidson at 11:30 a.m. ET on ESPNU in the first round of the Honda Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Georgetown battles Coastal Carolina at noon in the first round of the Charleston Classic in South Carolina.
In the evening, Pittsburgh continues play in the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer when the Panthers meet Maryland at Madison Square Garden (7 p.m., ESPN2). Also, USF plays at Central Florida (7 p.m., CBS College Sports) and Providence hosts Morgan State (7 p.m.).
