PROVIDENCE, R.I. – BIG EAST field hockey teams racked up regional honors with 22 making the All-Region Teams and Connecticut senior Melissa Gonzalez being named the Mideast Region Player of the Year.
Gonzalez started all 22 of UConn’s games in the midfield, scoring two goals and dishing out four assists. She was also the back-to-back BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year this season, helping Connecticut to a 16-6 overall record and a 4-2 mark in BIG EAST play. The senior was a three-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection and a second team pick as a freshman, leading the Huskies to the NCAA tournament each of her four years, including a trip to the quarterfinals this year. Gonzalez was named to the All-Mideast Region First Team along with UConn juniors Jestine Angelini and Rayell Heistand and freshmen Anne Jeute and Sarah Mansfield.
Syracuse rounded out the Mideast BIG EAST first teamers with freshmen Leonie Geyer and Laura Hahnefeldt, sophomore Amy Kee and juniors Martina Loncarica and Heather Susek. The Mideast Second Team consisted of SU senior Lindsey Conrad, Orange junior Nicole Nelson and Connecticut juniors Ali Blankmeyer and Cara Silverman.
Rutgers had senior Jenna Bull listed on the Mid-Atlantic Second Team, while Providence had three players earn region honors. Friar senior Julie Ruggieri was named to the All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team, while classmate Jaime Lipski and sophomore Nicole Fernandez made the second team list.
The All-West Region Teams consisted of four Louisville players. Junior Hayley Turner and 2010 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Nicole Youman took home first team nods, while Cardinal seniors Rachel Hollenbach and Tuli Lim made the second team.
