PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rutgers junior Jacquelyn Ward and Louisville junior Carlos Almeida were named the BIG EAST Female Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week and BIG EAST Male Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week, respectively, after turning in impressive performances.
Ward posted three individual wins in the 179-100 Scarlet Knight victory over Wagner Dec. 3. She finished the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.31 and the 500-yard free in 5:08.21. Ward also recorded a first-place finish in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:05.51. The junior also assisted in the winning 200 medley relay, which posted a time of 1:47.04. She swam the second leg of the race in 30.5 seconds.
Almeida recorded strong performances at the USA Short Course Nationals in Columbus, Ohio Dec. 2-4. He qualified for the class A-finals in two individual and two relay events, putting him among the top eight performers in the nation in those particular events. The junior finished sixth in the A-final of the 200-yard breaststroke touching at 1:56.23, which ranks No. 6 nationally this season. Almeida took eighth in the A-final of the 100 breast with a time of 53.36, ranking second nationally. He earned a fifth place finish in the B-final of the 200 individual medley in 1:46.84, which ranks No. 14 nationally.
