Week 4 Release
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Connecticut senior forward Maya Moore was named the BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Notre Dame’s Natalie Achonwa was selected as the BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week.
Moore scored 31 points, grabbed eight rebounds, blocked five shots, recorded four steals and dished out three assists in UConn’s win over Marquette on Dec. 9. Moore has scored at least 20 points 56 times in her career and has notched 30 or more points on eight occasions. Moore was 12-of-18 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from long-range. Her 31 points marked a season high and marked the third time this season Moore has scored at least 30 points.
Achonwa averaged 13.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game with a staggering 85.7 field goal percentage last week. She scored better than a point a minute (27 points in 26 minutes played) as Notre Dame picked up a BIG EAST road win at Providence and a non-conference home win over Creighton. Achonwa scored a team-high and a then-career-best 13 points in just nine minutes during the conference opener at Providence. She then scored a career-high 14 points and grabbed five rebounds in 17 minutes during Notre Dame’s win against Creighton.
The BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll:
Sam Quigley, DePaul, Sr., G (Joliet, Ill.)
Became DePaul’s 24th 1,000-point scorer with a season-best 17 points at Pittsburgh on Dec. 9, also dishing out a season-best nine assists. Finished the week with 13 assists and six turnovers, averaging 14.0 ppg, while nine of her 11 field goals were 3-pointers.
Monique Reid, Louisville, Jr., F (Louisville, Ky.)
Led the Cardinals with 21 points in a win against Dayton on Dec. 11. Shot 8-of-14 and grabbed eight rebounds, adding two assists and no turnovers.
Angel Robinson, Marquette, Sr., G (St. Paul, Minn.)
Scored in double-figures in back-to-back games, with 15 points at No. 1/1 Connecticut on Dec. 9 and 14 points in a win over No. 23/17 Green Bay on Dec. 12. Finished the week averaging 14.5 ppg on 45.8 percent shooting, averaging 4.5 rpg, 3.0 spg and 2.5 apg.
Shenneika Smith, St. John’s, So., G (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
Averaged 14.0 ppg and 7.5 rpg to lead St. John’s in both categories in a 2-0 week, adding five assists, a block and three steals. Recorded 10 points and 13 rebounds in a win against Seton Hall on Dec. 8.
Erica Morrow, Syracuse Sr., G (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
Her game-high 27 points led NR/RV Syracuse to a win against No. 6/6 Ohio State on Dec. 11. She went 10-of-18 from the floor, including a season-best four 3-pointers.
