PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Louisville’s Austen Childs and Pittsburgh’s Karma Parbhu were named BIG EAST Male Tennis Player of the Week and BIG EAST Female Tennis Player of the Week, respectively, following dominating performances last week.
Childs led the No. 15 Cardinals last week, going 2-1 in No. 1 singles action and 2-0 in No. 1 doubles play, while Parbhu helped the Panthers shutout St. Bonaventure 7-0 Feb. 20.
At the ITA Team Indoor National Championships, Childs, No. 11 in the ITA singles rankings, downed No. 6 UCLA’s 63rd-ranked Daniel Kosakowski 6-3, 6-2 Feb. 18. The senior defeated No. 16 Georgia’s 24th-ranked Javier Garrapiz 7-6 (7-4), 6-0, before dropping a 3-6, 3-6 decision to fourth-ranked Steven Johnson of No. 2 Southern California. He is 18-7 on the season and 9-2 in dual matches. In No. 1 doubles action, the 26th-ranked team of Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk beat UCLA’s Alex Brigham and Amit Inbar 8-5. The Cardinal duo also defeated USC’s Daneil Nguyen and Emilio Gomez 8-1. Childs and Maksimcuk are 14-6 (8-1) on the season.
Parbhu has won her last three singles matches for the Panthers. Playing in the No. 4 position last week, she earned a two-set victory, winning 6-2, 6-1 as Pitt swept St. Bonaventure. She teamed with Brittney Russell in No. 3 doubles action. After trailing 4-3, the Pitt duo came back to win 8-6 and seal the doubles’ point for the team.
