PROVIDENCE, R.I. – DePaul sophomore Sven Kasper and Notre Dame junior Kristy Frilling were named BIG EAST Male Tennis Player of the Week and BIG EAST Female Tennis Player of the Week, respectively, following dominating performances last week.
Kasper led the No. 64 Blue Demons last week, going 2-1 in No. 1 singles action and 2-0 in No. 2 doubles play, while Frilling helped the No. 14 Irish down three ranked teams.
DePaul kept its perfect home record with a 5-2 win over Western Michigan Feb. 26, improving to 10-2 on the season and 7-0 at the Lakeshore Athletic Club. In the top singles spot, Kasper defeated Michael Calderone 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The win spanned a two match skid. The sophomore is 7-5 in No. 1 singles action. He teamed with Bartosz Jozwiak to edge Western Michigan’s Pablo Olivarez and Casey Cullen 9-8 (5) in the second doubles spot. The Blue Demon duo moved to 16-8 in doubles play this season.
Frilling led Notre Dame to the Blue Gray Classic Championship Feb. 27 with a 4-0 win over No. 8 Virginia. The junior was named the 2011 Blue Gray Classic MVP after going 2-0 in No. 1 singles play and 3-0 in top doubles action. In the Irish’s 4-0 win over No. 51 Utah Feb. 25, she defeated Utah’s 114th-ranked Anastasia Putilina 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 and paired with Shannon Mathews to beat Putilina and Paige Miles 8-4. In Notre Dame’s 4-1 win against No. 23 Oklahoma Feb. 26, Frilling came from behind to beat OU’s Ana-Maria Constantinescu 2-6, 7-5, 7-5. In doubles play, Frilling and Matthews downed the No. 59 pair of Constantinescu and Alice Radu 8-4. The Irish sealed the championship title Feb. 27, shutting out No. 9 Virginia 4-0. ND’s No. 1 doubles team slipped past UVA’s No. 10 duo of Emily Fraser and Hana Tomljanovic 8-6. Frilling is 10-0 on the year at No. 1 singles and 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. She is 7-0 on the dual season against nationally-ranked opponents in the top 100 of the ITA rankings. The doubles win against UVA’s 10th-ranked pairing is the highest win with Shannon Mathews as teammate.
