West Virginia Postgame Quotes
No. 10 West Virginia vs. No. 15 Cincinnati
Game 3 – First Round, March 4, 2011
XL Center – Hartford, Conn.
Head Coach Mike Carey
Opening Statement:
“I thought we came in and did what we had to do. We got the lead and we were defending pretty well. We just weren’t rebounding very well. When we started rebounding better, we were able to stretch the lead.”
“I’d also just like to say that if you look at Sarah’s (Miles) stats, 10 assists, 2 turnovers. She is starting to get back into her timing. A lot of people don’t realize that she was hurt most of the season with hand surgery and then with her knee. She is just now getting her timing back and we are such a better team when she is up and down the floor.”
Senior Guard Liz Repella
I know Coach Carey said it was going to be “back door city,” with what Cincinnati was going to do to you tonight, how do you feel you defended that overall?
“I thought that we defended it pretty well. There were times that they got it, but for the most part I thought that we defended it well and got some steals out of it too because they were forcing the pass backdoor”
Sophomore Center Asya Bussie
What were you seeing from the defense today that you took advantage of to get more points than you normally would?
“I think we were just working inside out. They came over to double and we passed the ball out to our shooters. Once they started hitting shots, I was able to get some easy points inside.”
Cincinnati Postgame Quotes
No. 10 West Virginia vs. No. 15 Cincinnati
Game 3 – First Round, March 4, 2011
XL Center – Hartford, Conn.
Head Coach Jamelle Elliott
Opening Statement:
“ What can I say? West Virginia is a very, very, very, good defensive team. When we were coming in to the game, we knew we had to find ways to score, not even just to score, but just to get shots off against their stifling man-to-man defense and we didn’t do a good job of that. We hung in there with them for the first half, when we were down five. Towards the end of the first half, we allowed them to go on a little run and then obviously we weren’t able to recover. We get tired in the second half; that is the bottom line. Playing seven players, eventually against that type of defense we just wear down. Obviously we wore down today in the second half and we weren’t cutting as hard. We weren’t being sharp with our passes and it showed in the second half. Credit goes to West Virginia and Mike Carey. He did what he loves to do, stop guys from scoring, and we couldn’t hold them to under 41 points today and that is the difference in the game. Obviously I am happy for my two seniors Shareese Ulis and Shelly Bellman who were able to play in this game. They both had nagging injuries all year long. Shareese Ulis with her knees all year long, Shelly Bellman as recent as our Syracuse game having her shoulder out of whack. I am just really, really happy that my two seniors got a chance to play on the floor the last possible time that they can have a Cincinnati uniform on. With that being said, my hat is off to West Virginia. I am looking forward to staying here for a couple of days, to watch some good basketball and pick up some pointers, so I can continue to be a better coach.”
How tough is it to get a game plan around a guard like Sarah Miles (West Virginia Senior Guard)?
“I’ll tell you our game plan as well as everybody who plays West Virginia’s game plan is to play off of her. We know that she does not want to shoot. We know she just wants to create for her teammates by getting in the lane and penetrating and kicking out to shooters. Every now and then she will come off a ball screen and look to pull up for that 10 to 12 foot jump shot. For a team to have somebody in the point guard position whose only thought and only role is to get to the lane and kick it out to shooters, that’s a nice thing to have. Obviously she has done a good job with that since she has been at West Virginia. She’s been that type of person all four of her years here in the conference. She is a good player. Obviously they have a great player in Liz Repella for her to penetrate and dish too. I am going to look forward to watching them in the tournament.”
