Providence, R.I. – Only two BIG EAST rowing teams will be in action this week while the other six rest up for the 2011 BIG EAST Rowing Championship. The 2011 Championship will be held at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J., on May 1.

Idle: Connecticut, Louisville, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Syracuse, Villanova
Connecticut:Connecticut competed against Holy Cross and Boston College in Worcester, Mass., last week. The Huskies’ second varsity eight claimed first, beating out Holy Cross by just under five seconds. The crew crossed the finish line in 7:03.5. That boat was junior Brittanie Reinold, freshman Natalie Carlone (Fort Washington, Pa.), sophomore Adrienne Barrett, freshman Madelyn Walters, junior Mary Grace Haggett, sophomore Melissa Soucie, sophomore Deana Cabrey, freshman Beth Ryan and freshman Erin Mounce.
The Huskies next compete at the BIG EAST Championships on May 1 on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
Georgetown: Georgetown did not compete last week. The Hoyas last competed in the GW Invitational on April 9-10 on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. The crew’s first varsity eight including Amanda Savage, Lindsey Bragg, Kayla McNeill, Erin Landy, Dasha Ryaboshapka, Erin Carter, Sydney LeGuyader, Haley Allen and Victoria Stulgis defeated Brock University in open water in the Petite Final. The crew finished in a time of 6:37.5, close to 17 seconds faster than Brock.
The Hoyas take on Indiana on April 22 on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C.
Louisville: The Cardinals competed in the Charles River Challenge in Boston, Mass., on April 16-17. After beating Boston University in the second varsity eight race on the first day, Louisville earned varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four victories over BIG EAST foe Syracuse on the final day of the Charles River Challenge. The varsity eight was the lone crew to finish first in its race, finishing in a time of 7:22 to beat Minnesota, Syracuse and Boston University. The second varsity eight boat placed second, while the varsity four boat placed third.

Notre Dame: Notre Dame competed at the Gold River Challenge on April 16-17 in Sacramento, Calif. The Irish varsity four boat, comprised of Christina Dines, Ching-Ting Hwang, Courtney Gaberino, Teresa Rubinger and Kiersten DeHaven defeated Stanford, whose varsity four boat is ranked No. 6 in the West Region, by more than four seconds and beat Sacramento State by more than 47 seconds, finishing in 7:27.00.
The crew, which was made up of four freshmen, also had a near upset of No. 2 (West Region) California, losing to the Golden Bears by 3.35 seconds, but beating out No. 4 (West Region) Oregon State. The Irish seeded into the Group B finals, defeating No. 5 Tennessee (South Region), but falling to No. 3 Wisconsin (Central Region).

Rutgers: The Scarlet Knights competed against Penn and Cornell on April 16 in Ithaca, N.Y. The Scarlet Knights finished third in each of the four races, with Cornell taking home the Raritan Cup and the Class of ’89 plate.
Rutgers next competes at the BIG EAST Championships on May 1 on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
Syracuse:Syracuse competed at the Charles River Challenge in Boston, Mass., last week. The crew concluded the challenge with three third-place and one fourth-place finish. The Orange varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four were in action against Boston University, Louisville and Minnesota.
SU’s varsity eight, second varsity eight and second varsity four all finished third. The varsity four placed fourth.
Syracuse’s varsity eight completed the 2,000-meter course in 7:32.0, 10 seconds behind winner Louisville. The Orange second varsity eight posted a time of 7:54.14. Minnesota won the 2V8 race in 7:41.00. SU’s second varsity crossed the finish line in 10:15.0. Ohio State won the race with a time of 8:54.0.
The Orange varsity four recorded a time of 10:07.0. Boston University was first with a time of 9:03.0.
Syracuse next competes at the BIG EAST Championships on May 1 on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
Villanova: The Wildcats did not compete last week. Villanova had four different boats advance to the Grand Finals at the Knecht Cup on April 9-10. The top result for the team was a second-place finish for the novice eight, who crossed the finish line in 7:17.77.
Villanova also received the bronze medal in the second varsity four race after winning its preliminary heat. The crew’s varsity four and novice four boat each placed fourth in its Grand Final.
Villanova is idle this week. The team next competes at the BIG EAST Championships on May 1.
West Virginia: West Virginia did not compete last week.The Mountaineers competed at the Knecht Cup on April 9-10. In their first time rowing together, the crew’s novice four boat of Morgan Leach, Sara Olenich, Danicka Rencken, Jessica Hurlbert and Christina Mehrtens took first of 41 teams in the Grand Final. WVU won its preliminary heat and finished second in the semifinals before beating second-place Massachusetts by three seconds in the final.
The Mountaineers are idle this week. The team next competes on the Potomac River against George Washington and Georgetown on April 22.
