Georgetown Women’s Cross Country Claims NCAA Title
The Georgetown women’s cross country team captured its first NCAA Championship on Monday in Terre Haute, Ind. It is the third-straight year a BIG EAST team has won the women’s cross country championship. Villanova’s Sheila Reid, a senior, won the NCAA individual title for the second-straight year, while the Wildcats finished third overall. The BIG EAST had three teams finish in the top-10 with Georgetown first (162 points), Villanova third (181 points) and West Virginia eighth (297 points). Six BIG EAST individuals were honored with all-America selections by finishing in the top 40 at the championship.
Men’s Cross Country Led By Villanova
At the men’s cross country NCAA Championship, also in Terre Haute, Ind., on Monday, Villanova was the highest-finishing BIG EAST team at 13th with 352 points. Senior Eric Finan of Cincinnati placed 25th as the top BIG EAST runner.
BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Ends in NCAA Sweet 16
The Louisville women’s soccer team’s season ended with a 2-0 loss to No. 9 Florida State in the third round of the 2011 NCAA Championship. The Cardinals closed their record-setting season with a 14-7-3 record overall. Louisville set a school record for wins and the Cards earned the program’s first NCAA wins with first-round victories over Dayton and at No. 5 Memphis in the second round. This season is the first time since 2005 that a BIG EAST team has not competed in the NCAA Final Four.
Four BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Teams Advance to the NCAA Sweet 16
Connecticut, Louisville, Rutgers and USF each won second-round games to advance to the third round of the 2011 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship. All third-round games will be played on Nov. 27. No. 3 seed UConn will host James Madison at 1 p.m. No. 12 seed Louisville will play at No. 5 seed Maryland at 5 p.m. and Rutgers will play at No. 13 seed UCLA at the same time. No. 7 seed USF will host No. 10 seed New Mexico at 6 p.m.
Cincinnati Women’s Volleyball Wins BIG EAST Championship
The No. 2 seed Cincinnati Bearcats (25-8, 12-2 BIG EAST) defeated the No. 5 seed Notre Dame Fighting Irish (17-12, 8-6) 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 27-25) to win the 2011 BIG EAST Volleyball Championship title. It is the first crown for the Bearcats as a member of the BIG EAST Conference. Cincinnati earns the conference’s automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Championship. The NCAA Selection Show will air on ESPNU on Nov. 27 at 6 p.m.
Connecticut Field Hockey Reaches NCAA Final Four
The 2011 BIG EAST field hockey season came to a close after Connecticut fell 4-3 in double overtime to North Carolina in the semifinal round of the NCAA Championship on Nov. 18 in Louisville, Ky. Sophomore Marie Elena Bolles scored two goals for the Huskies, while sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Mansfield registered 19 saves. UConn ends the season with a 19-3 record. The Huskies were playing in their 10th national semifinal, and their third in the last six years.
