Three schools have been represented in the BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field weekly awards. Connecticut, Louisville and Villanova each had student-athletes cited by the conference office on Tuesday. Sophomore Noel James of Connecticut was named Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, while Louisville junior Amashi-ali Kendall was named Women’s Field Athlete of the Week for the second straight week. Villanova senior Ryan Sheridan was named BIG EAST Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, while Connecticut senior Heather Wilson earned BIG EAST Women’s Track Athlete of the Week honors.
James’ leap of 2.21 meters for first place at the Sykes and Sabock Challenge Cup is the best high jump mark in the BIG EAST this year.
Kendall recorded a pair of top-five performances at the VT Elite Meet, winning the weight throw and placing fourth in the shot put. She achieved personal-best marks in both events, ranking fifth nationally and first in the BIG EAST in the weight throw (20.83m), while ranking 32nd nationally and second in the BIG EAST in the shot put (15.58m). It was her third victory of the season in the weight throw.
Sheridan was the individual champion in the 5,000-meter run at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational. His time of 13:56.43 is the best mark in the BIG EAST by more than 15 seconds. His time ranks sixth in the nation as he continues to close in on an automatic NCAA qualifying time.
Wilson automatically qualified for the NCAA Championship in the 800-meter run with her 2:04.34 time at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational. The mark is also a Connecticut record.
The next BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Weekly Awards will be released on Feb. 14, 2012.
