No. 12 Syracuse vs. No. 13 Providence
Game 1 – First Round, March 2, 2012

Providence scored the first point of the game (a free throw), while Syracuse scored the first field goal to lead 2-1. The Orange never trailed again.
Syracuse led 46-28 with 8:29 left in the game, before Providence went on a 13-2 run to cut it to seven (48-41) with 5:05 left in the game, but that was as close as it got.
Junior Kayla Alexander entered the game with 1,368 points, sixth-most in SU history. She scored 15 and has 1,383 to remain in sixth-place on the school scoring list. Alexander also had nine rebounds.
SU senior Iasia Hemingway added 15 points.
The Orange did not convert a 3-point field goal (0-6).
It is the third straight year Syracuse has won its opening game of the tournament.
With the win, Syracuse will play No. 5 seed West Virginia on Saturday at Noon.
West Virginia and Syracuse met on Dec. 7 in the Carrier Dome, with WVU posting a 76-72 win. The teams are among the top rebounding schools in the league averaging 45.9 and 42.3 boards per game, respectively.
