PROVIDENCE, R.I. Notre Dame’s sophomore Trey Manciniwas selected as the BIG EAST Baseball Player of the Week and St. John’s junior Kyle Hansen was named BIG EAST Baseball Pitcher of the week after the fifth weekend of BIG EAST play.
Mancini keyed Notre Dame’s three-game sweep at Georgetown, hitting .500 (6-for-12) and slugging a league-high 1.333 against the Hoyas to help the Irish gain two places in the BIG EAST standings. Mancini scored four runs, had four RBI and saw four of his six hits go for extra bases, including a two-home run performance in Game 2 against the Hoyas. Mancini improved his batting average to .333 to go with seven home runs and 31 RBI this season.
Hansen turned in a complete-game shutout, allowing six hits (all singles) with a career-high 16 strikeouts in the Red Storm’s 9-0 win against Cincinnati, completing a series sweep of Bearcats and moving St. John’s into a three-way tie for first place in the BIG EAST standings. Hansen, who did not walk a batter, worked five 1-2-3 innings and struck out at least one batter in eight of his nine innings. He finished the weekend with a BIG EAST-leading 72 strikeouts this season.
