PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Louisville and St. John’s have been selected to compete in the 2012 NCAA Baseball Championship, as announced today by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee. The NCAA Championship is a 64-team tournament beginning with regional play on June 1. Each of the 16 regionals features four teams, playing a double-elimination format. The regionals are scheduled to be conducted from Friday, June 1, to Monday, June 4. Selection of the eight super regional hosts will be announced on Monday June 4 at approximately 11 p.m. The 66th Men’s College World Series begins play Friday, June 15, at the TD Ameritrade Park Omaha in Omaha, Neb.
No. 3 St. John’s vs. No. 2 East Carolina – TBA
After winning its record seventh BIG EAST Championship title, St. John’s (37-21) earned the league’s automatic bid into the 2012 NCAA Baseball Championship. The Red Storm defeated USF 7-3 in the title game Sunday at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla. St. John’s is the No. 3 seed in the Chapel Hill Regional and will take on No. 2 seed East Carolina. North Carolina is the No. 1 seed in the region and will face Ivy League champion Cornell. This will be the seventh NCAA Championship appearance in the last 10 years for the Red Storm. Last season the team was eliminated in the Regional round after going 1-2. The winner of the Chapel Hill Regional will face the winner of the Tucson Regional in the Super Regional round.
No. 3 Louisville vs. No. 2 New Mexico State – 7:00 p.m. ET
Louisville (39-20), the 2012 BIG EAST regular-season champion, is the No. 3 seed in the Tucson Regional and will take on No. 2 seed New Mexico St. at 7 p.m. The Cardinals won their third BIG EAST regular-season championship in four years and qualified for the NCAA Championship after missing out last season. The Cardinals played in the championship four straight years from 2007-10 with a trip to the College World Series in 2007. Arizona is the No. 1 seed in the region and will face Missouri at 11 p.m. The winner of the Tucson Regional will face the winner of the Chapel Hill Regional in the Super Regional round.
