PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Four different teams were represented as the season’s first BIG EAST women’s soccer weekly awards were announced on Monday afternoon. Rutgers redshirt-junior Jonelle Filigno earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Marquette senior Ally Miller was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week. Villanova senior Kelsey Quinn was the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week and Cincinnati freshman Laura Rose was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week.
After helping Canada secure a bronze medal at the Olympic Games earlier in the month, Filigno roared into the collegiate season with three goals, including two gamewinners, in a 2-0-0 opening weekend for Rutgers. She scored twice in a 3-0 victory over Monmouth on Aug. 17, including a PK conversion. The redshirt-junior also scored the only goal of the match in a 1-0 double overtime victory against rv/- Ohio State on Aug. 19.
Miller was tabbed BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week following her efforts in a 4-0 win over St. Bonaventure on Aug. 17. The senior anchored a defensive unit that allowed two shots, including just one shot on goal. Miller also assisted on the first goal of the match and played 79 minutes. She was the league’s Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
Quinn earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors after totaling a pair of shutouts over 200 minutes in a 1-0-1 week. She also tallied seven saves. In a 2-0 win over American on Aug. 17, she recorded the shutout with one save. In a 0-0 double overtime draw against No. 13/19 Maryland, the senior made six saves. It was the first time the Wildcats have come away with a win or a tie against a team ranked that high in the polls since 2004.
Rose was cited as the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week after amassing six points in a 1-0-1 week for the Bearcats. The freshman scored her first collegiate goal in the 12th minute against Elon on Aug. 17, the Bearcats’ only score in a 1-1 draw. Rose also scored twice in a 3-1 victory at N.C. State on Aug. 19.
Daphne Corboz, Georgetown, So., M
Scored a goal and had two assists totaling four points in a 2-0-0 weekend; had three points in a 2-0 victory at Delaware on Aug. 19.
Laura DiClemente, Providence, R-Sr., F
Netted a pair of goals in a 3-1 victory over Army on Aug. 19; she totaled 116 minutes of playing time in two games.
Alexis Koval, Syracuse, R-Fr., F/M
Sparked a comeback against Colgate on Aug. 19 after trailing 2-0, Koval scored twice to tie it. The Orange went on to win 3-2 in OT.
Heidi Sabatura, Villanova, Sr., F
Had a pair of assists in the opener against American which Villanova won 2-0 on Aug. 17; Sabatura also helped VU tie No. 13/19 Maryland 0-0 in double overtime on Aug. 19.
Shannon Woeller, Rutgers, R-Sr., B
Led the team to a pair of shutouts, a 3-0 victory over Monmouth on Aug. 17 and a 1-0 double overtime victory over rv/- Ohio State on Aug. 19. Woeller also scored a goal against Monmouth.
The 2012 season got under way last weekend as BIG EAST teams posted a 16-6-2 mark (.708 win percentage). A vast majority of the teams posted a win (14 of the 15) and were impressive at home going 10-2-0 (.833 win percentage).
