Wednesday Night in the BIG EAST
Syracuse and DePaul hosted nonconference matches last night with the Orange defeating Niagara and the Blue Demons losing to Green Bay. Both matches went all five sets. With the win, Syracuse has returned to the .500 mark with an 8-8 overall record while DePaul fell to 5-10 after its fourth straight loss.
The Orange won by scores of 25-22, 21-25, 26-24, 27-29 and 15-10. They were led by freshman Gosia Wlaszczuk’s 13-kill, 13-assist and 15-dig performance. Joining her with double-digit kills were classmate Silvi Uattara and sophomore Andrea Fisher with 14 and 10 respectively.
Three individuals recorded career highs last night. Sophomore Melina Violas of Syracuse led the defense for the Orange with a career-and match-high 29 digs while senior Rachel Aumann and sophomore Laura Witt of DePaul added career highs in kills and assists. Aumann registered 20 kills on a.357 attack percentage and Witt dished out 52 assists in the losing effort.
Two other members of the Blue Demons registered career bests as freshmen Aubree Hord notched 13 digs and Abbie Fleener tallied nine kills.
BIG EAST in the Poll
Louisville dropped five spots in the national poll after losing to Notre Dame and ranks No. 17 while Marquette and Notre Dame both received votes. It marks the first time this season the Fighting Irish have received votes.
What to Watch
The key match to keep an eye on this week is Marquette at Notre Dame. Fresh off its win over No. 10 Lousiville, the Fighting Irish (9-5, 2-0 BIG EAST) look for another big win against the Golden Eagles (10-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) on Sept. 29 in Notre Dame, Ind. Both teams are receiving votes in the AVCA Top-25 Poll.
