Monday Night in the BIG EAST
No. 15 Louisville moved up two spots in the AVCA Top-25 Poll just in time for its matchup against No. 9 Texas on Monday night. The Cardinals held a 2-1 advantage in the match but saw their lead slip away as the Longhorns rallied in set four before pulling away in the final set to claim a 3-2 win. Louisville lost by the scores of 25-21, 18-25, 25-21, 24-26 and 10-15 and are 16-3 overall.
Senior Lola Arslanbekova, Louisville’s all-time kill leader, had a match-high 29 kills and added 17 digs to complete the double-double. Joining her in double-digit kills was senior Gwen Rucker with 14. Junior Caitlin Welch led the defense with a career and match-high 37 digs and freshman Katie George dished out a team-high 34 assists.
Hasn’t Come Easy
Louisville has faced five top-25 teams this season and is 3-2 in those games. The Cardinals also defeated a Miami (Fla.) team that has received votes in the poll each week. The only team from the BIG EAST to face more top-25 teams than Louisville this year is Cincinnati. The Bearcats have seen seven of the nation’s best but failed to grab a win. They will face the Cardinals on Oct. 28 and Nov. 11.
Proving the Preseason Polls Wrong
Through three weeks of BIG EAST play, St. John’s remains just one of four teams with one loss or less. The Red Storm are fourth in the league with a 4-1 conference mark and 17-4 overall record. They were picked to finish 12th in the conference and have already surpassed last year’s BIG EAST win total by three. They will face another test in league play on Friday, Oct. 12 when they host No. 15 Louisville.
