Connecticut’s Brice and Louisville’s Gadd Earn First Swimming and Diving Awards of the Season

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Connecticut freshman John Brice was named men’s swimming and diving BIG EAST Athlete of the Week and Louisville senior Hannah Gadd earned women’s swimming and diving BIG EAST Athlete of the Week honors in the first weekly awards of the 2012-13 season.

 

Brice qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships on the 3-meter board in a meet against Bucknell and Fordham. The freshman took first place in the event with 323.90 points. He also claimed the 1-meter board with 284.20 points, helping Connecticut defeat Bucknell and Fordham by scores of 191-105 and 175-125 respectively.

 

Gadd won a pair of diving events at the SMU Classic. She took first place on the 1-meter board with 301.65 points and placed first on the 3-meter board with 286.20 points. Gadd defeated a field that included divers from USC, Texas, Florida, SMU and North Carolina. The senior beat the 1-meter field by 40 points and the 3-meter field by 20.

 

The 2012-13 Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week honors will be awarded throughout the season when at least half of the teams are participating. The next weekly awards will be announced on Oct. 30.   

 

Notes From Around the League:

  • Louisville junior Joao De Lucca ranks among the nation’s best in the 100 and 200-yard freestyles. He is third among all NCAA leaders in the 100 freestyle with a time of 44:04 and eighth in the 200 with a mark of 1:38.76.
  • Louisville freshman Bryan Draganosky ranks among the best in the country in the 1,000-yard freestyle. He ranks seventh in the NCAA with a time of 9:21.14.
  • Louisville freshman Kelsi Worrell has the seventh-best time in the country in the 100 meter butterfly with a 54.21-second mark.
  • The Louisville women’s 200 freestyle relay team has the ninth best time in the NCAA with a mark of 1:34.57 and its women’s 800 freestyle relay squad ranks 10th with a time of 7:33.68.
  • Seton Hall sophomore diver Ben Mitchell broke school records on Oct. 16 and Oct. 18. He recorded the highest six-dive mark in school history on the 1-meter board with a score of 322.88 and set a school record in 3-meter diving with 285.45 points.
  • Eight teams remain undefeated through two weeks of competition; both Connecticut teams, both Notre Dame teams, both Pittsburgh teams, and Rutgers’ and Seton Hall’s women’s teams.
