Marquette Golden Eagles Women's Basketball
The BIG Picture
Marquette will be looking to bounce back after 2011-12 saw its streak of nine consecutive postseason appearances end when the Golden Eagles suffered their first losing season since the 2000-01 season. MU’s 14-17 overall record marked just the second time in the Terri Mitchell era the team has suffered a losing season. Marquette will be leaning on its upperclassmen to set the tone for the season. Senior Sarina Simmons is MU’s lone senior, while the junior class boasts four members. Point guard Gabi Minix, who ranked second in the BIG EAST in assists is back as MU’s floor general.
The Golden Eagles will look to Katherine Plouffe for her versatility again in 2012-13. Plouffe led Marquette in three statistical categories in 2011-12, including scoring (13.5 ppg), rebounding (8.1 rpg) and minutes (33.7 mpg). Simmons hopes to finish her final season at Marquette on a high note. A 2009 All-BIG EAST Freshman team selection, she averaged 8.9 points and 6.9 rebounds, and blocked a team best 43 shots last season.
Marquette returns all five starters and all 11 letterwinners from a season ago that finished 14-17 overall and 4-12 in BIG EAST Conference play.
Marquette added two guards to bolster its backcourt rotation. Joining the Golden Eagles are rookies Brooklyn Pumroy and Ashley Santos. Santos was a member of the U18 and U16 Puerto Rican National Team. First year assistant coach Tyler Summitt joins Terri Mitchell’s staff. Summitt is the only son of legendary Tennessee head coach Pat Summitt who recently retired and is now head coach emeritus for the Lady Vols.
