INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - 2012 BIG EAST field hockey champion Connecticut (18-2) and 2012 BIG EAST regular-season champion Syracuse (17-2) both claimed spots in the 2012 NCAA Championship. The Huskies were selected as the No. 3 overall seed in the 16-team field, and will host regional first- and second-round games on Nov. 10-11 at the George J. Sherman Family Complex in Storrs, Conn. First round matches begin Nov. 10.
Connecticut enters the NCAA tournament as the reigning BIG EAST Champion, and received the league’s automatic bid. The Huskies recorded the longest winning streak in Division I this season at 16 games. Connecticut will face Northeastern (14-6) in the first round in Storrs, Conn., at 11:30 a.m. The Huskies have faced Northeastern in the first round of the NCAA tournament three times in the last 10 years, with Northeastern leading the first round series 2-1. Connecticut advanced to the NCAA semifinal round last year, and has made the NCAA Tournament field for 11 consecutive years.
Syracuse was an at-large selection, and enters the field as the No. 5 ranked team in the nation according to the NFHCA Coaches’ Poll. The Orange were ranked No. 1 for two consecutive weeks this season (Sept. 25 and Oct. 2). Syracuse will face Massachusetts (15-8) on Nov. 10 at 2:00 p.m., and the Penn State Field Hockey Complex in State College, Pa. The Minutewomen handed the Orange their only loss of the regular season 2-1 in Amherst, Mass., on Oct. 11. The Orange made the quarterfinal round in 2011, losing to Maryland, the eventual national champion. Syracuse will make its fifth straight appearance at the NCAA Tournament.
Eleven conference champions received automatic bids to the 16-team tournament, and the remaining five were selected at-large. First-round games will be played Nov. 10 and the second round begins Nov. 11. The semifinalists will head to Norfolk, Va., on Nov. 16. The final will be Nov. 18. Old Dominion University is the host.
