The 2012-13 college basketball season begins Friday as eight BIG EAST teams take to the court for the first time.
Friday’s schedule is highlighted by three games against top-25 opponents that will be played on military locations in conjunction with Veterans Day weekend. Connecticut and new coach Kevin Ollie face a tough test out of the gate as the Huskies take on No. 14/14 Michigan State at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany. It will be the regular-season game between two U.S. colleges to be played in Europe.
Two games will be played on aircraft carriers Friday. Marquette takes on No. 4/4 Ohio State — a 2012 Final Four participant — in the Carrier Classic on the USS Yorktown off Mount Pleasant, S.C. Georgetown will face No. 10/10 Florida in the Navy/Marine Corps Classic aboard the USS Bataan off of Jacksonville, Fla.
Five more BIG EAST teams begin their seasons in more traditional surroundings. Pittsburgh hosts Mount St. Mary’s at 6 p.m., Villanova takes on District of Columbia at 7, Rutgers hosts Saint Peter’s and Seton Hall entertains UMKC at 7:30, and DePaul takes on UC Riverside at 9 Eastern.
