Updated BIG EAST Notes
Road teams picked up a pair of tight wins on Sunday as St. John’s (7-6, 1-0 BIG EAST) won at Rutgers (9-5, 0-1 BIG EAST) by the score of 48-44 in a game televised on ESPNU. Villanova (11-2, 1-0 BIG EAST) won at Cincinnati (8-6, 0-1 BIG EAST) by the score of 54-51.
St. John’s-Rutgers Highlights
In the St. John’s win, senior Shenneika Smith led the way with game-highs of 18 points and seven rebounds. St. John’s has won five straight over Rutgers and three-consecutive times at the RAC. Sophomore Betnijah Laney had 15 points shooting 7-of-11 from the field to lead the Scarlet Knights. Senior Monique Oliver started, but played just 10 minutes and did not score a point.
In the Villanova win, senior Laura Sweeney scored a game-high 15 points for the Wildcats. Villanova outscored Cincinnati 9-2 in the final three minutes and 20 seconds to pull out the win. The Wildcats opened the second half 0-of-12 from 3-point range, but hit two of its final three long-range shots to win it.
Senior Dayeesha Hollins had 16 points for the Bearcats.
League teams are off on Monday and return to action on Tuesday.
