Dolson And Jenkins Earn WBB Weekly Honors

BIG EAST Player of the Week

Stefanie Dolson, Connecticut, Jr., C (Port Jervis, N.Y./Minisink Valley)

Dolson averaged 20.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg and 4.5 assists per game, while shooting 63 percent from the field, in a 2-0 week for the Huskies. Dolson had 16 points and nine rebounds in a win against No. 15/13 Louisville, connecting on 8-of-11 from the floor. She had a career-high 25 points, adding seven rebounds and dishing out six assists  in a win against RV/23 Syracuse. She reached the 1,000-point plateau in the first half against the Orange.

 

 

BIG EAST Freshman of the Week

Chanise Jenkins, DePaul, Fr., G (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young)

Jenkins tied a season-high with 14 points in a loss at RV/23 Syracuse on Jan. 15. She had seven assists with only one turnover, grabbed four rebounds and made four 3-pointers. In a win against Providence, Jenkins had eight points, two steals, seven assists, seven rebounds and made both of her free throw attempts.

 

BIG EAST Honor Roll

Brittany Hrynko, DePaul, So., G

Hrynko averaged 18.0 ppg and 8.0 rpg as the Blue Demons went 1-1 last week. She added seven steals and 16 assists.

 

Andrea White, Georgetown, Jr., F

White averaged a double-double with 16.0 ppg and 11.0 rpg in a 1-1 week. She shot 55 percent from the field and had six assists and four blocks.

 

Skylar Diggins, Notre Dame, Sr., G

Diggins averaged 16.5 ppg in a 2-0 week for the Irish, adding 15 assists and nine steals.

 

Katherine Plouffe, Marquette,  Jr., F

Plouffe averaged 13.0 ppg and 9.5 rpg in a 2-0 week for Marquette, while dishing out 10 assists.

 

Laura Sweeney, Villanova, Sr., F

Sweeney averaged 17.5 ppg and 9.5 rpg in a 2-0 week. She shot 61 percent and had four blocks.

Notre Dame’s Hot Start

The No. 2/3 Fighting Irish defeated St. John’s 74-50 at home on Jan. 20, winning its 11th-straight game. The 11-game winning streak ties for the seventh-longest in school history and marks the third time in four seasons the Fighting Irish have had a string of at least 11 consecutive wins. The Fighting Irish are off to a 5-0 start in BIG EAST play for the second consecutive season and sixth time in school history.

 

Villanova Making It Memorable

Wildcat junior guard Devon Kane made three foul shots with under a second remaining to lift Villanova to a 52-49 win over the visiting USF on Jan. 19. It was the Wildcats first win over the Bulls in eight tries. With the victory, Villanova improved to 15-2 overall and 4-0 in BIG EAST play for the first time since 1986-87. There were eight ties and six lead changes in the game. Villanova also improved to 6-0 this year at home.

 

Dolson Surpasses 1,000 Points With Career Day

UConn junior Stefanie Dolson shot 9-of-16 from the field for a career-high 25 points in an 87-62 win over RV/23 Syracuse on Jan. 19 at home. She also had seven rebounds, six assists, two blocks and two steals. She surpassed 1,000 points for her career and has 1,017.

 

DePaul Dominates At Home

DePaul is 11-1 at McGrath-Phillips Arena in 2012-13 and 159-24 since 2000-01. The Blue Demons are riding a 10-game home winning streak, longest in the league.

 

Louisville Strong On Defense Too

The No. 15/13 Cardinals have been getting it done on both sides of the ball. Ranked among the league leaders in scoring at 74.8 ppg, Louisville also ranks third in the BIG EAST defensively allowing just 51.1 ppg. In its last time out against Cincinnati on Jan. 18, Louisville held the Bearcats below 20 points in both halves. The Cardinals led 31-15 at the intermission and won 72-33.
