Updated BIG EAST Notes
Three road teams won Wednesday night, Louisville, Rutgers and St. John’s.
No. 12/12 Louisville (18-4, 6-2 BIG EAST) got a career-high 38 points from junior Shoni Schimmel to edge USF 78-75. It is the second time this year a BIG EAST player has scored 38 points, as Georgetown senior Sugar Rodgers accomplished the feat against Yale on Dec. 28, 2012. In conference action, it is the highest point total since former UConn standout Maya Moore scored 38 points at Syracuse on Feb. 24, 2010.
Louisville led by one at halftime 42-41, but trailed by nine with 13:23 left. There were seven ties and 11 lead changes.
After being held without a 3-pointer in its last game, Louisville went 10-of-23 from beyond the arc. Schimmel shot 12-of-20 from the field and made eight 3-pointers. The league record is 10 3-pointers in a game.
USF senior Andrell Smith had 18 points and a career-high 11 assists to lead the Bulls (14-6, 3-4 BIG EAST).
In Milwaukee, Rutgers (12-8, 3-4 BIG EAST) got a season-high 23 points from senior Monique Oliver. Oliver netted 17 of her 23 points in second-half action as the Scarlet Knights overcame a 29-28 halftime deficit and outscored the Golden Eagles 44-35. Rutgers improved to 11-0 all-time against Marquette (10-10, 2-5 BIG EAST). The Golden Eagles were led by junior Katherine Plouffe with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
In the Ocean State, St. John’s (10-9, 4-3 BIG EAST) beat Providence 65-51. The Red Storm had four players in double figures and got a game-high 21 points from senior Nadirah McKenith. The Friars (6-14, 1-6 BIG EAST) held a 34-25 halftime lead, but shot just 27-percent in the final 20 minutes.
Syracuse (17-3, 5-2 BIG EAST) was the only league team to win at home on Wednesday. The Orange beat Seton Hall 65-34 as senior Kayla Alexander had 13 points and 12 rebounds for her league-leading 27th double-double of her career. Syracuse remained undefeated at home (9-0) has not lost in the Carrier Dome since Feb. 25, 2012 to Georgetown. Seton Hall moved to 8-13, 3-5 BIG EAST.
