PROVIDENCE, R.I.- Four top-10 national performances last week earned Cincinnati’s Mackenzie Fields, Georgetown’s Chelsea Cox, Notre Dame’s Patrick Feeney and Rutgers’ Corey Crawford weekly BIG EAST Track & Field awards.
Fields recorded a mark of 4.20m in the pole vault at the Armory Collegiate Invitational at the Armory in New York, N.Y., to finish second and earn BIG EAST Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honors. The height matches a season-best for the senior, who currently ranks first in the BIG EAST and seventh-best in the nation in the event.
Rutgers’ Corey Crawford was named BIG EAST Men’s Field Athlete of the Week after finishing third in the long jump at the Armory Collegiate Invitational with a mark of 7.61m. The junior beat his own top league mark of 7.60m, and leads the league by .36 meters. Crawford’s jump ranks ninth in the nation.
Also competing at the Armory Collegiate Invitational, Georgetown’s Chelsea Cox finished first in the 800m with a time of 2:06.51. Her mark in the 800m ranks first in the league and ninth in the nation. Cox also ran the 800m leg of the distance medley relay to help the Hoyas to a third-place finish in 11:05.66. Georgetown’s distance medley relay ranks fourth nationally.
Notre Dame’s Patrick Feeney earned BIG EAST Men’s Track Athlete of the Week honors with a first-place finish in the 400m at the Meyo Invitational. The junior finished in 46.13, a time that tops the league and ranks second nationally. Feeney also anchored the winning 4x400m relay team for the Fighting Irish.
According to the NCAA, “qualification to the [NCAA] championships is based on the descending-order list for the season…for each individual event contested, the top 16 declared student-athletes will be accepted into the competition. For each relay contested, the top 12 relay teams will be accepted into the competition…There are no qualifying standards for the championships season.”
The BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championships will take place Feb. 16-17 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
