PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib, one of the most prolific passers in BIG EAST history and the offensive catalyst for a team that shared the 2012 conference title, has been chosen as the 2012 American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The selection was made by the conference’s Academic Affairs Committee and is presented on the basis of academic credentials and athletic performance.
A graduate student from West Chester, Pa., Nassib will receive a $2,000 scholarship, which may be applied to graduate or professional studies, as the Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Nassib additionally was chosen as Syracuse’s Institutional Male Scholar-Athlete, giving him another $2,000 award.
The Conference also announced the 207 players who were chosen to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team.
Nassib enjoyed a record-setting season in 2012 as he broke his own single-season school marks for completions (294) and passing yards (3,749) and set a school record with 26 touchdown passes. He led the BIG EAST in passing (288.4 yards per game) and total offense (299.3 ypg) and was second in the conference in touchdown passes on his way to All-BIG EAST Second Team honors. He helped Syracuse to six wins in its last seven games, capped by a 38-14 win against West Virginia in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. The Orange went 5-2 in BIG EAST play to claim a share of the conference championship for the first time since 2004.
Nassib finished his career the BIG EAST leader in completed passes (791), while he ranks fourth all-time with 9,190 passing yards. Both marks are school records. His 70 career touchdown passes rank second in BIG EAST history, while his six 300-yard games are good for third all-time.
In addition to his on-field accomplishments, Nassib carries a 3.833 grade-point average as an accounting major in Syracuse’s graduate program. He earned his undergraduate degree in accounting and finance with a 3.572 GPA.
Nassib was one of 15 players nationally to be awarded a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award. He was chosen to the Capital One Academic All-District Team in 2010 and 2012, is a member of the Syracuse Football Senior Leadership Council and has volunteered as a mentor at the Onondaga County Justice Center. He is projected as an early-round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft.
Nassib is the second Syracuse player to be chosen as the American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year, joining Kyle Johnson, the 2001 winner. The honor is one of a number of scholarships presented by the BIG EAST Conference and American Eagle Outfitters during the 2012-13 academic year. Thirty student-athletes (one male and one female from each of the BIG EAST’s 15 member institutions) are named winners of the American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarships. The conference also names male and female American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Basketball Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
The winners of the institutional, football and basketball awards are then eligible for the American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, which provides an additional postgraduate scholarship to one male and one female student-athlete.
