HARTFORD, Conn. – Villanova (21-9) set a BIG EAST Championship record with 17 3-pointers in an 89-58 victory over Georgetown (15-16) in the Second Round of the BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Championship presented by American Eagle Outfitters held at the XL Center.
|Sugar Rodgers Scored a BIG EAST-record 42 points
Georgetown senior Sugar Rodgers scored a career-high and BIG EAST tournament record 42 points. Rodgers was 15-of-30 field and 6-of-12 from 3-point range.
“I think it means a lot,” said Rodgers. “I've done a lot to get here. I'm about to cry but like I said I've worked hard. I want to thank the BIG EAST, I want to thank Georgetown, I want to thank everybody for letting me participate in all of this.”
Villanova shot 17-of-31 from beyond the arc, including a 10-of-15 effort in the first half. The Wildcats also had 24 assists on 29 baskets (83-percent). Villanova led 50-27 at halftime.
“It is kind of cool because that is what we are known for, said Perretta on the 3-point effort. “It is kind of cool that people think of us that way and we were able to get the record in this BIG EAST Tournament. We’ll probably make none tomorrow.”
Villanova also had a school-record 89 points in a BIG EAST tournament game and improved to 31-26 all-time. The 89 points by Villanova are the most by a Wildcat team since a 98-60 win over WVU on Jan. 3, 2001.
With the win, No. 6 seed Villanova advances to play No. 3 seed Syracuse on Sunday, March 10 at 8:30 p.m. ET, on ESPNU.
