Three BIG EAST teams competed Tuesday night and went 3-1 against nonconferene opponents. Georgetown swept its doubleheader against Princeton at home 3-1 and 7-6 (9 innings), No. 11 /11 Louisville beat Iowa 6-4 and Villanova dropped an 8-5 decision to St. Joseph’s.
The Hoyas were led by pitcher Lauren O’Leary in game one. The sophomore pitched a complete game, allowed just one run (unearned) on three hits and struck out 11 batters. In game two, Georgetown trailed by two runs in the bottom of the ninth before sophomore Sophia Garqicevich-Almeida hit a walk-off double to put Georgetown ahead 7-6.
A four-run bottom of the first inning lifted the Cardinals to its 24th win on the season. Junior Katie Keller went 3-for-4 from the plate and classmate Taner Fowler hit a three-run double to lead the team offensively. Louisville and Iowa split its two-game series.
The Wildcats recorded double digit hits in its loss to St. Joseph’s. Despite a losing effort, freshman Kate Poppe recorded her 100th strikeout on the season and has 101 in 85.2 innings this year.
There are three BIG EAST games on Wednesday’s slate. Rutgers is scheduled to face Dartmouth at 4:30 p.m. in Tampa, Fla. at the USF Softball Stadium followed by USF and Dartmouth at 7 p.m. Also on today’s schedule is Indiana at Louisville starting at 6 p.m.
