Connecticut’s Loren Sherer Named Mideast Region Field Hockey Player of the Year

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Connecticut senior forward Loren Sherer was named Mideast Region Player of the Year by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association following a record-breaking season. Along with Sherer, 17 other BIG EAST field hockey student-athletes earned 2009 Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I All-Region honors, including 11 receiving first team recognition.

Sherer entered the 2009 NCAA Division I Championship as the nation's leading scorer and the leader in points per game (3.81). She broke UConn's single-season points record (84) as well as UConn's single season goals record (33). Sherer was named the BIG EAST Championship's Most Outstanding Player, was a unanimous First Team All-Big East selection, and was named the Big East Offensive Player of the Year.

The Mideast Region featured the most BIG EAST student-athletes with 10 selections from two schools. On the first team were Connecticut's junior midfielder Melissa Gonzalez, sophomore back Rayell Heistand and Sherer. Syracuse earned the most first team selections with junior forward Lindsey Conrad, junior back Kim Coyle, sophomore midfielder Martina Loncarica and freshman back Amy Kee all recognized. The second team featured sophomore midfielder/forward Cara Silverman of the Huskies and junior back Maggie Befort and sophomore forward Heather Susek of the Orange.

Louisville represented the BIG EAST in the West Region with four honorees. Senior goalkeeper Heather Bustanoby and junior midfielder/back Nicole Youman were named to the first team, while junior forward/midfielder Tuli Lim and sophomore midfielder Hayley Turner were named to the second team.

Providence had three student-athletes recognized in the Northeast Region. Senior forward Nellie Poulin and junior midfielder/forward Jaime Lipski earned first team recognition, while junior midfielder Julie Ruggieri earned second team honors.
 
Villanova junior forward/midfielder Dana Ramsden was named to the Mid-Atlantic Region second team.
