In his new role, Gavitt will set the strategic direction for and oversee the operation and management of the Division I, II and III men’s basketball championships.

The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community.

The awards are given each year to teams with APRs in the top 10 percent in their respective sports. A total of 263 schools, out of 347 Division I colleges and universities, placed at least one team on the top APR list, including 15 of the 16 BIG EAST schools.

On Saturday, March 31st, the BIG EAST Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) performed a community service day with Special Olympics Rhode Island. Fourteen student-athletes and athletic administrators representing various BIG EAST Conference schools, visited East Providence Bowling Lanes and assisted with their Unified Bowling Tournament for over 200 athletes.

The BIG EAST Conference will honor the memory of its founder and first commissioner Dave Gavitt with a moment of silence at every school’s first conference home men’s and women's basketball game. Gavitt, who founded the conference in May of 1979, passed away on September 16.

The BIG EAST Conference welcomed new members Boise State, Central Florida, Houston, San Diego State and SMU with messages on the American Eagle Outfitters video board in Times Square.
