Three BIG EAST men’s soccer teams opened 2011 NCAA Championship play on Thursday, with Providence, West Virginia and Rutgers all winning to advance to the second round.

Seven BIG EAST men’s soccer teams were selected to compete in the 2011 NCAA College Cup, the most of any conference.

Junior midfielder Jack Bennett lifted the St. John’s men’s soccer team past Connecticut when he scored his fifth game-winning goal of the season in front of a crowd of 2,178 at Red Bull Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Junior forward Stephane Diop scored the lone goal of the first BIG EAST men’s soccer championship semifinal to lead Connecticut past defending champion Louisville 1-0 at Red Bull Arena on Friday evening.

The Red Storm will meet Connecticut on Sunday for the title.

Five schools shared the BIG EAST men’s soccer postseason honors, as awards and all-conference teams were announced on Thursday evening at the 2011 BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship banquet, held at the Short Hills Hilton.
