PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- USF quarterback Matt Grothe, Pittsburgh linebacker Scott McKillop and Cincinnati wide receiver Mardy Gilyard have been chosen as the recipients of the BIG EAST Conference's weekly football accolades following games of Sept. 6.
Grothe, who was chosen as BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, accounted for 400 yards of total offense and was the game’s leading passer and rusher in the Bulls’ 31-24 overtime win at Central Florida. He completed 23 of 40 passes for 346 yards and three touchdowns and had 54 rushing yards on 20 carries. Grothe threw a 25-yard touchdown pass in overtime to account for the winning points.
McKillop was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week after he had a game-high 15 tackles to go with one tackle for loss, a pass breakup and two quarterback hurries in the Panthers’ 27-16 win against Buffalo.
Gilyard was honored as BIG EAST Special Teams Player of the Week after he set a BIG EAST record with 246 yards on kickoff returns and had a school-record 365 all-purpose yards in the Bearcats’ 52-26 loss at No. 4 Oklahoma. He scored a touchdown on a 97-yard kickoff return and also finished with seven receptions for 119 yards.
WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
Donald Brown, RB, Connecticut — Rushed for a career-high 214 yards and a touchdown on 36 carries in a 12-9 overtime win at Temple. Scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime and was the only Connecticut player to handle the ball in the extra period.
Scott Lutrus, LB, Connecticut — Had a team-high 12 tackles with 0.5 tackles for loss in the 12-9 win at Temple. Led a Connecticut defense that hasn’t allowed a touchdown through two games.
Victor Anderson, RB, Louisville — Had 12 carries for a career-high 114 yards and a touchdown in a 51-10 win against Tennessee Tech.
LeSean McCoy, RB, Pittsburgh — Rushed for 93 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries in a 27-16 win against Buffalo.
Curtis Brinkley, RB, Syracuse — Rushed for a career-high 143 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries in a 42-28 loss to Akron.
