PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Connecticut Huskies maintained their hold on all first-place votes in both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN women's basketball polls. No. 1 UConn is joined in the top-10 by Notre Dame, which came in at No. 6 and 5, respectively.
Connecticut (1-0) hoisted its seventh NCAA Championship banner and then knocked off Northeastern 105-35 at Gampel Pavilion to open the season on Nov. 14. Senior Tina Charles led all players with 26 points and 13 rebounds. Charles, who was 11-of-17 from the field in the game, led six Huskies in double-figures. She was joined by junior Maya Moore, who added 18 points and 10 rebounds. UConn opened the game on a 28-0 run in the first 5:34 of the contest.
Notre Dame (1-0) started the 2009-10 campaign with a 102-57 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Nov. 15. The Irish had a school-record eight players score in double figures, eclipsing the old standard of seven double-digit scorers that was first set on Feb. 6, 1997 vs. Syracuse (90-73 win at the Joyce Center) and matched on Jan. 19, 2008, in a 104-86 win at Georgetown. Junior forward Becca Bruszewski led the way with game-highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds in front of a crowd of 9,080.
No. 17/RV DePaul (2-0) earned a pair of wins during the first weekend of play beating Central Michigan 86-76 on Nov. 13, and topping North Dakota State 77-65 on Nov. 15. Sophomore forward Keisha Hampton scored a team-leading and career-high 23 points against CMU while senior guard Deirdre Naughton scored a game-high 20 points against North Dakota State. Naughton also surpassed 1,000 points for her career at DePaul and is in her third season in Lincoln Park after transferring from Wake Forest. She has tallied 1,438 career points and has registered double-digits in 79 of her 93 career games. The Winnetka, Ill. native becomes just the 23rd player in DePaul's history to reach the century mark.
No. 23/19 Louisville (1-0) began the year with a hard-fought, 65-63 road win at Dayton on Nov. 15. The national runner-up withstood a hostile crowd of 1,197 and were led offensively by senior forward Monique Reid who had a game-highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds off the bench.
Despite not playing a game yet, Pittsburgh moved up to No. 25 in the USA Today/ESPN poll and also received votes from the Associated Press.
Rutgers and St. John's also received votes from the Associated Press. Along with the Scarlet Knights, Syracuse, Georgetown, South Florida and West Virginia received votes in the USA Today/ESPN poll.
