Week 5 Weekly Release
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – DePaul junior forward Keisha Hampton was selected as the BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Connecticut freshman guard Bria Hartley earned honors as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week.
Hampton scored 27 points, 23 of which came in the final 20 minutes, to lead DePaul past No. 3/2 Stanford on Dec. 16. Hampton shot 57 percent from the field against Stanford. It was her sixth 20-point performance of the season and the 12th of her career. She added 11 points in DePaul’s win over Northwestern on Dec. 13 to go along with a career-high six assists. The win against Stanford was the Blue Demons’ highest ranked win in 37 seasons. Hampton is averaging 16.7 ppg in DePaul’s current 10-game win streak.
Hartley scored 13 points, dished out five assists and grabbed three rebounds in Connecticut’s 81-50 victory against No. 11/10 Ohio State at the Maggie Dixon Classic in Madison Square Garden. Hartley was 5-of-10 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the free throw line as the Huskies recorded their 88th-straight win, tying the UCLA Division I men’s record.
The BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll:
Tiffany Hayes, Connecticut, Jr., G (Lakeland, Fla.)
Hayes scored 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting to lead UConn to an 81-50 win against No. 11/10 Ohio State at the Maggie Dixon Classic on Dec. 20. Hayes had a 9-0 run early in the first half to give the Huskies a lead they didn’t relinquish.
Courtney Weibel, Marquette, Sr., G (Rockton, Ill.)
Weibel connected on a Marquette record and career-high eight 3-pointers in the Golden Eagles’ win against UNC-Asheville on Dec. 18. She finished with a career-high 24 points in 22 minutes, shooting 72.7 percent from three-point range (8-of-11).
Shenneika Smith, St. John’s, So., G (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
Smith averaged 17.0 ppg and 8.5 rpg in a 2-0 week for the Red Storm. She had 15 points, nine rebounds, three steals and three blocks in a win over UC-Santa Barbara and was named Mrs. Eleanor Taffner Tournament MVP. Against Southern Mississippi, she had 19 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
Porche Grant, USF, Sr., C (Oxon Hills, Md.)
Averaged 14.7 rebounds per game last week, recording three double-doubles, including 20 rebounds and 11 points at UNLV, 14 points and 14 rebounds against Wake Forest and 10 points and 10 rebounds vs. SMU.
Madina Ali, West Virginia, RSr., F (Williamsport, Pa.)
Ali had a perfect night against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Dec. 18, going 7-of-7 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line to finish with 18 points in 18 minutes to go along with two blocks, two steals and seven rebounds in the win.
