KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Five BIG EAST women’s soccer stars have been named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List for the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy. Notre Dame leads the league with three players on the list; senior defender Lauren Fowlkes, junior midfielder Courtney Barg and junior forward Melissa Henderson. Rutgers senior Gina DeMaio and Georgetown redshirt junior Ingrid Wells also were selected to the ranking. All five league players were named Preseason All-BIG EAST selections earlier this week.
In addition, Henderson was named the BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while Fowlkes was named the BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Wells was the sole unanimous All-BIG EAST Preseason selection among the 12-person squad.
A BIG EAST player has won the award five times, including former Notre Dame standout Kerri Hanks who won the award in 2006 and 2008 becoming the first league player to accomplish the feat twice.
Overall, Notre Dame was one of five schools to place three players on the list. With five players named to the list, the BIG EAST ties the Big Ten and Big 12 for the third-most selections from one conference behind the ACC (nine) and Pac-10 (seven).
Considered soccer’s version of the Heisman Trophy, recipients of MAC’s Hermann Trophy are selected by Division I head coaches who are current members of the NSCAA. A list of 15 semifinalists will be selected by a committee in November, with three finalists announced in early December. The winner will be presented with the trophy in January at the Missouri Athletic Club, located in downtown St. Louis.
