PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The USA Women’s Basketball National Team added four international veterans yesterday, including former BIG EAST stars Rebekkah Brunson, Georgetown ’04, and Kia Vaughn, Rutgers ’09, along with Jayne Appel and Ebony Hoffman. The 24 member roster now consists of 10 former BIG EAST players with one current member from the conference in Connecticut’s Maya Moore. The 2010 USA World Championship and 2012 U.S. Olympic teams will be selected from the 2009-12 National Team roster.
Both players will add some depth down low for Team USA. Brunson, the 2004 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, is a 6-2 forward currently playing with the Minnesota Lynx, while her new teammate Vaughn is 6-4 center for the New York Liberty.
“Certainly one of the positions that we are trying to shore up is in the post,” said USA Basketball Women’s National Team and University of Connecticut head coach Geno Auriemma. “These four additions give us a lot of options to choose from. I’m anxious to see how they fit in. And depending on who’s available because of the playoffs, I think it’s important to have as many options as possible.”
Brunson, Vaughn and the rest of their teammates will report for duty in Washington, D.C. Sept. 4 for practice sessions before jetting off to Europe in mid-September for the 2010 FIBA World Championship. Daily practices for Team USA will take place Sept. 4-7 beginning at 10 a.m. The squad will then move to Hartford, Conn. to train at the XL Center Sept. 9 before hosting current world champion Australia for an exhibition game Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. The U.S. National Team will also take on the No. 5-ranked women’s program in the world, Spain, in another exhibition Sept. 12 at 1 p.m.
Tickets to the Australia and Spain contests are available through Ticketmaster, either online at ticketmaster.com or by calling 1-800-745-3000. Tickets can also be purchased at the XL Center box office.
