PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Cincinnati swimmer Josh Schneider  followed up his record-setting BIG EAST Championships performance with  another dominating effort at the NCAA Swimming & Diving  Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Schneider, who is the two-time  defending BIG EAST Swimmer of the Year, set a pool record of 18.93  seconds in the 50-yard freestyle to win his first NCAA individual title.

Schneider also had a great showing in the 100-yard freestyle,  entering the finals as the eight seed, but finished sixth overall with a  time of 42.68. He also placed ninth overall in the 100-yard butterfly  with a time of 46.21. His three top-10 finishes gave Cincinnati 42 team  points and helped the Bearcats finish 20th in the team standings at the  Championship.

The Louisville men tied for 21st with 37 points. Carlos  Almeida was the best individual finisher with a fifth-place  performance in the 200-yard breaststroke. Almeida entered as the seven  seed and jumped two spots with a time of 1:54.27. The Cardinal swimmer  also finished 29th in the 200-yard individual medley (145.89), 12th in  the 100-yard breaststroke (53.32), and combined with Carlos Van  Isschott, Pedro Oliveira and Kristopher  Findorff to finish 12th in the 400-yard medley relay (3:09.88)  and 15th in the 200 medley (1:27.36). Van Isshot added a 14th-place  performance (47.07) in the 100-yard backstroke and finished 40th overall  in the 100 free (44.26). Oliveira came in 16th in the 200 fly  (1:44.33).

Connecticut diver Stephen Ferreira tallied a point  total of 287.70 in the 3-meter diving event to finish in 28th place.

On the women’s side, there were 11 individual and team top-20  finishes at the NCAA Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. Louisville  was the top BIG EAST performer, finishing tied for 34th with Western  Kentucky, Kentucky and Arkansas at 15 points. Notre Dame came in at 38th  with 14 points and West Virginia finished in 44th with four points.


The top individual performance belonged to ND’s Amywren  Miller who finished eighth in the 50 free with a time of 22.49.  Miller also came in 25th in the 100 free (49.44). Her teammate Samantha  Maxwell chipped in a 14th-place showing in the 100-yard  breaststroke (1:01.09) and a 36th-place finish in the 200 breast  (2:14.17).

Louisville made its mark in the 200-yard freestyle relay as the  team of Whitney Campbell, Nicole Landish,  Aileen Cole and Elizabeth Halet finished  in 1:30.26 to take 11th place. UofL also tallied an 18th-place finish  with the team of Campbell, Leslie Vanwinkle, Cole and  Halet in the 400 free relay (3:20.59) and two 19th-place finishes with  the team of Campbell, Therese Bergstrom, Landish and  Halet in the 400 medley relay (3:44.35) and the 200 medley relay  (1:40.51). Bergstrom added a top-15 finish to her NCAA resume with a  14th-place performance in the 100 breast (1:01.09). Campbell had two  top-40 finishes with a 15th-place mark in the 50 free (22.64) and a  33rd-place finish in the 100 free (49.61).
