PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rutgersand No. 5 Connecticut shared the field hockey weekly awards this week, as RU’s Christie Morad was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and UConn’s Sarah Mansfield was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference today.
Morad recorded one goal and one assist in a 1-1 week for Rutgers, collecting three points. The junior back scored the game-winning goal in the 1-0 win over Ohio Friday, Sept. 3. Her first career goal helped lead the Scarlet Knights to their first shutout since November 2008. Morad’s assist came off of a Jenna Bull score in the 3-2 loss to Richmond Sunday, Sept. 5.
Mansfield earned a pair of wins this past weekend, making nine saves and collecting the second shutout of her young career in only her third game. The freshman keeper made four saves in UConn’s 2-1 victory over No. 18 Penn State Friday. She followed that effort with a five-save game in the Huskies’ 2-0 win over Michigan Sunday. Mansfield has played every minute for the 3-0 Huskies and has only allowed one goal. Her GAA shrunk to 0.43 and her save percentage rose to .923 after Sunday’s shutout win.
The BIG EAST went 7-6 (.538) during its second week of play in the 2010 season, while facing five ranked opponents. The conference went 4-1 against Top 20 teams last week, after going 0-3 the week before. The conference is now 4-4 (.500) this season against ranked opponents and 13-12 (.520) overall. The BIG EAST improved to 1-3 in overtime contests, after going 1-1 this past week as No. 8 Syracuse beat No. 14 Ohio State 2-1.
