PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Cincinnati senior Stephanie Niemer was named BIG EAST Player of the Week for the second consecutive week as announced by the conference office on Monday. It is the fourth time in her career that the senior has been named the league Player of the Week, and third straight week for a Cincinnati player. Villanova freshman Alyssa Anderson was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the second time this season.
Niemer earns BIG EAST Player of the Week honors for the second straight week after leading the Bearcats to impressive victories over a pair of Big Ten opponents at a tournament in Louisville. The senior recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 28 kills and 15 digs in a victory over then-No. 5 Illinois on Sept. 17. She had 32.5 of the team’s 70 total points in the match while also hitting .338. Niemer followed that with a conference season-best 32 kills in a 3-0 sweep of Purdue on Sept. 18. At one point in the match, the Cincinnati outside hitter had 26 kills while the entire Purdue team had 30. It was her second 30-kill performance in three matches while also recording a hitting percentage of .453. Niemer averaged 7.50 kills and 2.88 digs per set for the week, to go with a .391 hitting percentage. The Erlanger, Ky., native was named tournament MVP.
The Bearcats are now 2-0 versus ranked opponents this season, with Niemer notching a combined 46 kills in those two matches. The wins boosted Cincinnati into the latest AVCA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll released on Monday, as the Bearcats are now ranked No. 25 in the country. The Bearcats are the first BIG EAST team to crack the top 25 this season.
Anderson earns BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this season after helping the Wildcats to a 3-0 week. She led all freshmen last week with 11.18 assists per set, including tying a career-best with 55 assists in a win over Maryland on Sept. 17. The Hermosa Beach, Calif., native had 34 assists and two digs against Long Island and 34 assists and nine digs in a win over William & Mary on Sept. 18. Anderson was named to the Villanova Classic all-tournament team.
Syracuse posted another undefeated week last week, going 4-0 to push its overall record to 16-0. The 16-0 start set a school record and is the best start for a BIG EAST team since 2005, when Louisville began the season 20-0.
