PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Villanova and Syracuse split the BIG EAST field hockey weekly awards. Villanova senior Abby Sordoni picked up her first BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honor, while Syracuse freshman Laura Hahnefeldt earned her first BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week accolade.
Sordoni scored three of Villanova’s five goals last week, tallying seven points. The senior recorded a hat trick against BIG EAST foe Providence Oct. 9, en route to shutting out the Friars 4-0. The forward also dished out an assist on Oct. 6 in a 2-1 overtime loss to Rider.
Hahnefeldt led Syracuse’s defensive effort in a 2-1 overtime victory at No. 18 Albany Oct. 10. Hahnefeldt and the Orange defense limited the Great Danes to just six shots. The freshman and her teammates did not allow a single shot in the second half and only one in overtime.
The BIG EAST enters its fifth week of conference play as Rutgers travels to Providence Oct. 16 for an 11 a.m. start. Georgetown hosts No. 9 Syracuse at 1 p.m. Oct. 16, while Villanova takes on No. 8 Louisville at 1 p.m. as well. In ranked action this week, No. 9 Syracuse squares off with No. 17 Stanford Oct. 15 at noon. Rutgers also faces No. 17 Stanford Oct. 17 at 1 p.m., while No. 5 Connecticut hosts No. 3 Princeton Oct. 17 at 2 p.m.
