BIG EAST fall sports have a busy weekend ahead, with conference championships approaching quickly. Men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey, football, cross country and women’s volleyball are all in action this weekend.
All eight women's soccer teams are in action on Friday as the league's regular-season winds down. Five of the 10 spots for the BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship have been secured, but just one of the 10 seeds are determined (Notre Dame as the National Division No. 1). This afternoon, DePaul heads to Georgetown, while Notre Dame is at Villanova. Later tonight, Cincinnati travels to Rutgers and Providence is at Pittsburgh. Seton Hall welcomes Louisville and West Virginia hosts Connecticut. Other action has St. John's at USF and Syracuse at Marquette.
BIG EAST volleyball officially moves past the midway point of the season this weekend, with every team having played at least eight matches by the end of play on Sunday. Friday features four matches, all with the first serve scheduled for 7 p.m. Louisville puts its six match winning streak on the line as the Cardinals host Georgetown. Villanova looks to keep pace with Cincinnati and Louisville as the Wildcats host Pittsburgh. Villanova, Cincinnati and Louisville all enter the weekend with one loss.
Saturday has three matches on tap, including Notre Dame hosting Syracuse. The Orange are currently just outside the playoff picture in ninth place with a 3-3 BIG EAST record. DePaul looks for its third straight win when the Blue Demons host Marquette at 3 p.m., and No. 23 Cincinnati hosts USF at 2 p.m.
Sunday is packed with BIG EAST volleyball action with seven matches on the schedule. Louisville hosts USF in the earliest start of the day at 1 p.m. Other matches include Connecticut hosting Rutgers, Seton Hall welcoming St. John’s and Villanova battling West Virginia all at 2 p.m.
No. NR/21 Notre Dame and No. 5/6 Connecticut get men’s soccer action started this weekend, with a game under the lights Friday night at 8 p.m. in Storrs, Conn. Connecticut, along with Georgetown, Villanova, Cincinnati, USF and Louisville have all clinched berths to the 2010 BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship, while two spots are still up for grabs.
Saturday has six games scheduled, including an important match for West Virginia against Seton Hall at 7:30 p.m. The Mountaineers are in a battle for playoff position with Marquette. The Golden Eagles are at Georgetown at 1 p.m. Pittsburgh and Providence round out the weekend action with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
In BIG EAST field hockey action today, Rutgers hosts Columbia at 3 p.m., while Georgetown travels to Villanova at 7 p.m. for the only league game of the day. The Hoyas and the Wildcats are both 1-3 in conference-play.
BIG EAST field hockey play continues into the weekend with No. 4 Connecticut traveling to No. 8 Syracuse Oct. 23 at noon, while Providence hosts No. 10 Louisville at 1 p.m. In other ranked-opponent action this weekend, No. 8 Syracuse takes on No. 13 Boston College Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.
