NEW ORLEANS, La. – With the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships in the books, the conference found itself with five men’s squads and four women’s teams in the top 30 in the country according to the latest USTFCCCA poll. The five men’s teams tie the BIG EAST with the ACC for the most teams in the rankings, while the women’s side is tied with the Pac-10 for the most teams in the top 15 with four.
2010 BIG EAST men’s champion Syracuse moved up three spots to No. 14 after the team’s win at Jamesville Beach Park on Oct. 30. Led by the 2010 BIG EAST men’s Coaching Staff of the Year, the Orange totaled 59 points to claim the top spot on the men’s side and remain the highest ranked BIG EAST men’s team.
Louisville made the biggest jump of any team in the poll after an impressive second-place finish at the BIG EAST Championships. The Cardinals were just four points behind Syracuse with 63 to finish second. It was the team’s highest finish since winning the title in 2007. Providence made a return to the poll at No. 28 after a third-place finish at the conference meet. The Friars boasted the BIG EAST individual champion in junior Lee Carey who completed the 8k course in 24:56.8. Villanova remains in the top 30 at No. 29 while Notre Dame is ranked No. 30.
The Villanova women have had a stranglehold on the No. 1 ranking all season since winning the 2009 NCAA Championship. Led by the 2010 BIG EAST women’s Coaching Staff of the Year, Villanova continued to show its dominance by winning its third straight BIG EAST title, becoming the first team to do so since Providence in 1995-97. The Wildcats posted a score of 26 points, the lowest point total for any BIG EAST champion since Villanova scored 22 points in 1991. Junior Sheila Reid also repeated as individual champion for the Wildcats, finishing the 6k course in 20:31.9. She is the first individual champion to repeat since Providence’s Kim Smith in 2003-04 and no athlete has ever won the individual title three times.
Georgetown remains at No. 5 in the country with a strong outing at the BIG EAST Championships, coming in second with 42 total points. The Hoyas placed three runners in the top 10, with junior Emily Infeld taking third in a time of 20:42.7. Syracuse also remained in the top 10 at No. 9, while Providence comes in at No. 14.
Next week is a scheduled “repeat” week in the national poll in advance of the upcoming NCAA Regional Championship weekend to be held November 13. The final regular-season poll will be announced on November 16 before the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships to be held on Monday, November 22, in Terre Haute, Ind.
