Harrison, NJ - Members of the BIG EAST staff arrived to Red Bull Arena early this morning to supervise team walkthroughs and work on some last minute details with the arena staff. Bringing this championship to Red Bull Arena for the first time was a project many months in the making on and on the morning of the event anticipation is running high.
Last night, members of the four participating teams as well as major award winners from non-competing schools gathered in an elegant ballroom at the Hilton Short Hills. At this event all-conference teams and major award winners were announced. READ RELEASE
This championship banquet is different than many others that the BIG EAST hosts because the players are actually given assigned seats and teams are broken up to mingle with members of opposing teams.
BIG EAST Associate Commissioner for Olympic Sports Jim Siedliski served as the master of ceremonies for the evening. He reminded the players that there is only one first time for this championship to be held at this world class soccer facility and the players we spoke to seemed to understand the significance of their conference championship being played here.
The excitement was evidenced during this morning’s walkthrough. As the Cincinnati Bearcats came out to the pitch for the first time, nearly ever player was pulling out their phones and cameras and snapping shots of the venue. A collective gasp came out when the stadium’s LCD boards were turned on for the first time.
This evening’s semifinal games start up at 5:00 PM on CBS College Sports Network with Providence taking on Cincinnati. The second game of the evening features nationally ranked Notre Dame and No. 1 Louisville.
We will have updates throughout the day and make sure to follow @BIGEASTChamps
