PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The BIG EAST Conference has named West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith, Connecticut linebacker Lawrence Wilson and Syracuse kicker Ross Krautman the winners of the league's weekly football honors for the week-ending Nov. 13.
Smith was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after he threw four touchdown passes – all in the first half – to stake West Virginia to a 30-0 lead on its way to a 37-10 win against Cincinnati. Smith was 12-for-22 for 150 yards in the first half, including scoring strikes of 32, 10, 48 and 5 yards to match his career high in touchdown passes. He finished the day 15 of 25 for 174 yards as the Mountaineers earned bowl eligibility for the ninth consecutive year.
Wilson, named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, had 11 tackles, including a sack, to lead a Connecticut defense that forced four turnovers and had three sacks in a 30-28 win against first-place Pittsburgh. The BIG EAST leader in tackles (95), Wilson registered his fifth game this season with double-digit stops and has led the Huskies to back-to-back wins against teams picked first and second in the BIG EAST preseason poll.
On a day when points were hard to find, Krautman, the BIG EAST Special Teams Player of the Week, delivered the game-tying and game-winning points as Syracuse rallied for a 13-10 win at Rutgers, giving the Orange bowl eligibility for the first time since 2004. Krautman hit a 48-yard field goal in the third quarter to forge a 10-10 tie and he was good from 24 yards with 1:07 left in the fourth quarter to account for the final score. The gamewinner was Krautman’s BIG EAST-leading 15th field goal of the season.
