PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The 2010 season concluded for the remaining two BIG EAST field hockey teams last weekend as Syracuse and Connecticut both fell in the second round of the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship.
2010 BIG EAST Champion Syracuse (16-5) defeated Penn State for the first time in program history Nov. 13, winning 3-2 in overtime during the first round. SU has advanced to the quarterfinals for three consecutive years. In the second round of tournament play, Ohio State edged the Orange 3-2 in overtime. This season SU clinched its third-straight BIG EAST Regular Season Championship, going 6-0 in league play. Syracuse also knocked off a conference-best seven ranked opponents this year.
Connecticut (16-6) beat American 3-2 on a sudden victory penalty stroke after two overtimes Nov. 13 in the opening round of the NCAA Championship. In the quarterfinals, UConn fell 3-1 to No. 1 Maryland Nov. 14. The Huskies led the BIG EAST with eight shutouts and a 0.95 team GAA for the 2010 campaign. They are third in the nation in GAA and fourth in shutouts per game with 0.36.
